In 1928, Atatürk reformed the language, replacing the Ottoman script used before with an alphabet based on the Latin one, with letters borrowed from the Swedish, Albanian, Romanian, and German alphabets. The Turkish alphabet consists of 29 letters.
Turkish is spoken by approximately 65 million people, making it the most commonly spoken of the Turkic languages. It is spoken predominately in Turkey and Cyprus, but also has speakers in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and other parts of Eastern Europe. Turkish is also spoken by several million immigrants in Western Europe, particularly in Germany.
